Measles
Measles also known as rubeola is a highly contagious viral infection. This causes respiratory infection in the affected person. It commonly affects children.
Symptoms to look for:

Certain home remedies have been found beneficial in the treatment of measles. . Here are some natural home remedies for measles.



  1. In the beginning of the treatment, the patient should be given juices of fresh fruits like orange and tangerine frequently. The citrus flavor of these fruits can offset the loss of appetite brought on by the infection. Orange and tangerine juices also help reduce dehydration and boost immunity with their vitamin C content. Intake about two glasses of the juice per day. This is sufficient as the child suffers from lack of appetite during this period. Orange juice is the most ideal liquid food in this disease. Tangerine juice may be more agreeable if the stomach is upset.
  2. Mix well 1 tsp turmeric powder in 2 tbs extracted juice of basil and take it twice a day.
  3. Soak 2 tbsp of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water for 2 hours. Strain and drink 3 tsp of this water after every 30 minutes.
  4. Lemon juice is known to be beneficial for treating measles. It also makes an effective thirst-quenching drink in measles. Juice from at least two lemon and diluted with at least 30 milliliters of water will help your child.
  5. Children can be given powdered licorice mixed with honey to reduce coughs and sore throats. Mix ½ tsp each of licorice and honey and consume on a daily basis.
  6. Turmeric is beneficial in the treatment of measles. Make a combination of one teaspoon honey, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, and fresh juice of 2-3 bitter gourd leaves. This should be given to the patient suffering from measles mixture at least once a day for effective results.
  7. Drinking a glass of Barley water 2-3 times on daily basis is beneficial in treating measles. Barley water can offer relief against dry, heavy coughs during measles.
  8. Eggplant seeds act as stimulant in curing measles. Taking ½ to 1 gram of these seeds daily for about three days will develop immunity against measles for 1 year.
  9. Mix equal amounts of tamarind seeds powder and turmeric powder. Have this mixture, in a dose of 350 to 400 milligrams, three times a day.

  13. Lukewarm water baths can be given every day to ease itching. Addition of Neem leaves to the bathing water will prove beneficial.
  14. Application Coconut milk can be especially soothing and has antibacterial and antifungal properties to avoid infection due to scratching.
  15. For pain and itching relief and to promote healing, soak cotton balls in milk and apply to the skin.
  16. Barley is beneficial in treating measles. A barley bath can also soothe irritated skin and make the rash less itchy.
  17. To help with the itching put a half cup of baking soda in the bath filled with lukewarm water, soak the child in the bath until the itching diminishes.
  18. Having a balanced diet is essential in treating measles. A special diet will not cure this viral infection, but foods that supply vitamin A, such as eggs and most dairy products, can restore levels depleted by the disease. Avoid having milk products, spicy food and junk foods. As the condition improves, the child can be placed on an all-fruit diet for a few days. After this the child can be put on to a more regular routine diet, but one that is very well balanced. The fibrous content of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with the vitamins made available through the consumption of these fruits, plays a very important role in recovery from an illness such as measles.
  19. Children having measles should not be allowed to mix with others. They should be given complete rest. Hygienic conditions along with the above mentioned treatment will lead to speed recovery. Wash bedding, towels and clothes daily to avoid infection. Medications should be strictly avoided.
  20. Keep the child rested in a dim dark room until the rash has disappeared. Sorry, but absolutely no TV or reading until the symptoms have all disappeared.
  21. People with measles can be sensitive to light. Use heavy curtains on windows and keep overhead lighting off or dim.
  22. Do not share common objects like bed linen, towels etc. with the patient as this will prevent the infection from spreading.
  23. Anyone suffering from measles will require a lot of rest to recover. Allow for plenty of sleep and restrict all physical activities.
  24. Conjunctivitis often accompanies measles. Wipe away crustiness from eyes by using a separate cotton ball for each eye. Wipe from the corner of the eye outward.
  25. Drink plenty of fluids to help avoid dehydration, fruit juice and herbal tea to replace fluids lost by fever and sweating.
  26. Running a humidifier in the room will keep the air moist and will treat the cough that accompanies the measles virus. If a humidifier is not available, just place a large bowl of water in the room to increase humidity.
